The bookshelf in the living room of our home boasts an impressive collection of DVDs. Many of our guests like to admire them and borrow one or begin a discussion about their favorite movies. My DVD collection started when I realized that my family didn’t own very many movies; the first DVD I purchased was Charlie’s Angels, from Circuit City (remember that place??).
I’ve always loved movies. Growing up, my brother, dad, and I would quote and analyze movies riding in the car or over dinner. My poor mom was always left out of the discussion, but among the rest of us, the topic of movies never ran dry. My brother and I have a relationship that’s probably 40-60% based around quoting Disney Channel Original Movies to each other.
So, this is a not-so-definitive, but still time-tested collection of what I think are the 50 best movies (that I’ve seen, anyways!). Keep in mind that my least favorite genre of movie is drama, so sorry if your favorite one is left off the list. Also keep in mind that I have a very dry sense of humor, and little tolerance for potty or slapstick humor. Thirdly, I also have watched the same few chick flicks an unreasonable amount over the past 5-ish years since I got engaged. Lastly, I love Sci-Fi. That is all.
What do I think makes a good movie? My criteria are: solid plot, (pretty) good acting, memorable lines, makes me laugh, makes me think, could watch over and over again. Basically, to make the list, it has to be a movie you could mention and I would be willing to watch at the drop of a hat.
